What should I do if I’m having financial difficulties, and I can’t make my loan payment?

If you're struggling to make your loan payment, you're not alone. Upstart understands that financial difficulties happen, and we may have options to help you stay on track.

How to Request Financial Assistance

✔ Log into your My Account. You must be logged into your account in order to access the hardship application. After logging into your account you can apply here.
✔ Fill out the request—our team will review it and may ask for additional information.
✔ You’ll receive an update 
within 7 business days via email and your dashboard.
✔ If approved, you'll see 
personalized hardship options in your account.
✔ If you have 
multiple loans, a separate request is required for each one.

Relief Loan Flexible Payment Options

✔ Relief loan borrowers may be eligible for flexible payment options that are specific to this loan product.
✔ If this option is available on your loan, you will see the “Repayment Flexibility” section on your My Account dashboard.  Check here to see your progress towards eligibility or review potential updates to your payment plan.
✔ Eligibility is unlocked by building good payment history at the beginning of your loan term. 

Note: A one-time non-refundable fee may apply when changing your repayment plan.  Upstart reports term extensions to the credit bureaus as loan modifications, which may affect your credit score.

Who Qualifies for Hardship Assistance?

✔ If you're experiencing a financial hardship and have made sufficient prior payments, you may be eligible.
✔ Your loan must 
not be in its final payment period, already settled, or charged off.
✔ Each situation is unique—
even if you’re unsure, submit an application and we’ll review your options.
✔ If you aren’t eligible, we’ll provide next steps via email and your dashboard.

What Happens If You're Approved?

✔ Log into My Account to review your available options.
✔ Select the best plan for you and confirm the new payment terms.
✔ Choose a 
future payment method and finalize your plan.

Will Hardship Affect Your Credit?

✔ Hardships are reported to credit bureaus.
✔ If you have questions, you can always contact the 
credit bureaus for more details.
